Tunisia, March 17, 2025 (LANA) – The Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture announced the entry of groups of desert locusts into the Dhehiba region of Tataouine Governorate in the south of the country, following southerly winds.

The ministry said in a statement that technical teams from the ministry had arrived at the site and determined that the swarms were not in the form of swarms and that they currently do not pose a threat to the vegetation cover in the region.

The statement added that the technical teams are continuing to conduct a comprehensive survey of the entire region to monitor locust movements. All stakeholders at the central and regional levels have been mobilized to remain vigilant and intensify the treatment campaign against the pest. The necessary equipment, spraying machines, and pesticides have also been sent to combat the numbers that have entered Tunisian territory.

The ministry confirmed that the countries of the Sahel and North Africa are witnessing a widespread locust infestation, especially Libya, which is currently experiencing a surge in the pest. This is due to the availability of favorable conditions for locust reproduction, including rainfall and the availability of green vegetation.
