Tripoli 12, 2025 (LANA) - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya - UNSMIL - called for a full investigation into the two mass graves found in Ajkhara in the oases and Kufra during the past two days for illegal migrants, and for the perpetrators of the crimes to be brought to justice.
The mission expressed its deep concern over the discovery of a mass grave on February 7, on a farm in the Ajkhara area in the oases, containing 19 bodies, and the discovery on the 8th of the same month of 40 bodies in the Kufra area, some of which bore traces of gunshot wounds.
The UN mission said, based on reports, that the victims had been detained by human traffickers for several months, and were subjected to severe ill-treatment and torture. Due to their irregular status, they were re-detained.
The mission called for their immediate release as part of an alternatives to detention program, as well as access to vital services. The UN mission in Libya stressed that these two graves are a horrific reminder of the urgent need to combat human trafficking and ensure the human rights of vulnerable migrants.
