Tripoli, 6 February 2025 (Lana) Chief of the Supreme Judicial Council, Miftah Al Gawy, discussed with the UN Deputy Representative of the Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Stephanie Koury, ways of reinforcing the independence of the judiciary and strengthening the unity of judicial authority.

This came during a meeting held yesterday at the Council’s headquarters in Tripoli.

The council stated on its Facebook page that the meeting discussed the role of the judiciary in adjudicating electoral disputes and exchanged views on best practices to ensure impartiality, transparency, and the rule of law in electoral processes.

Al Gawy stressed the importance of supporting the independence of the judiciary in a way that contributes to strengthening confidence in the judicial institution and consolidating the principles of justice.

For her side, Koury stressed the UNSMIL’s commitment to supporting Libya’s judicial institutions in their efforts to uphold justice, protect fundamental rights, and contribute to preserving stability.
