Geneva, January 24, 2025 (LANA) - The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) confirmed that about 30 million children are deprived of their right to education in the Middle East and North Africa region, especially in areas that have witnessed conflicts and crises such as Sudan and the Gaza Strip.

The organization said on, Friday, in a statement on the occasion of the International Day of Education, which falls on January 24 of each year, that the ongoing conflicts and crises in Sudan, Palestine, Syria and other countries have caused a "huge decline" in the gains made in the field of education in the region.

The statement explained that 16.5 million children are out of school in Sudan, as a result of the violent conflict that destroyed the educational infrastructure and disrupted the educational process, threatening the collapse of the education system in the country.

Also added, that about 645,000 children are deprived of education in the Gaza Strip, where all schools have been closed since October 2023, noting that 84 percent of schools in Gaza need complete reconstruction or major rehabilitation. UNICEF indicated that the number of out-of-school children between the ages of 5 and 18 has reached at least 30 million in 12 countries in the region, equivalent to one child out of every three children.
