Pulbished on:Tripoli, December 17, 2024 (LANA) - France, Germany, Italy, Britain and the United States affirmed their support for the efforts made by the Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Stephanie Khoury, to unify the government in Libya, and their rejection of any initiatives parallel to the UN efforts.
The embassies of these countries said in a joint statement today, Tuesday, that the briefing provided by Khoury on Libya defined the approach of the UN mission to advance the political process, expressing their support for efforts to reach a political agreement in Libya that addresses institutional fragmentation and unifies the government and the country more broadly.
The statement urged the establishment of a credible path towards comprehensive, free, fair and transparent presidential and parliamentary elections, in line with the legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people and consistent with Security Council resolutions.
The five countries expressed their readiness to do everything in their power to ensure the success of these efforts, and encourage all Libyan stakeholders to participate in the UN process in good faith and in a spirit of compromise.
It also called on all concerned parties to refrain from any parallel and uncoordinated initiatives that undermine the efforts led by the United Nations, reaffirming its commitment to preserving Libya's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, according to the statement.
