A number of members of the House of Representatives issue a statement regarding the briefing of the Acting Head of the United Nations Mission in Libya (Stephanie Khoury) before the Security Council
Pulbished on:Benghazi, December 16, 2024 (LANA) - A number of members of the House of Representatives issued a statement this evening regarding the speech and briefing of the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, "Stephanie Khoury", before the Security Council. The statement - issued by MPs Fawzi Al-Nuwairi, Talal Al-Mihoub, Aisha Shalabi and Salem Qanan - held the UN mission and the international community behind it legally and morally responsible for the continued suffering of the Libyan people and the resulting deterioration in the political, economic and security situation.
The statement said that Khoury's recent speech and briefing contained nothing but general phrases and repeated positions that do not meet the minimum aspirations of our steadfast people. The UN mission has proven, through its cowardly positions, that it has become part of the problem instead of being a means of solution.
The statement considered the continuation of the UN mission in Libya in this approach as fueling the crisis and prolonging the suffering of the Libyans, which is something that cannot be ignored.
The statement added that this repeated failure to perform the mission's tasks raises major question marks about the extent of its commitment to helping the Libyans overcome their crisis and build their state on the foundations of peace and stability.
It also stressed that the Libyans, of all their spectrums, will not accept that their country turns into an arena for conflicts of interests International, and will not allow any external party to tamper with their sovereignty and future.
In their statement, the members expressed the House of Representatives' complete rejection of any attempt to impose detailed solutions outside the will of the Libyan people or bypass their legitimate representatives, stressing that saving Libya from this critical and ongoing situation will only be through the reconciliation of all the people, stopping mutual accusations and exaggerating nationalism, and accepting that the only way out of this crisis is to lay down arms and restore civility in all state institutions, and ending centralization in governance.
In their statement, the members of the House of Representatives called on the UN mission to assume its full responsibilities and work seriously to support the will of the Libyans towards ending the transitional stages and unifying the institutions.
They also called for an end to negative international interventions, and respect for the sovereignty of the Libyan state and its right to self-determination away from external dictates.
The statement stressed the need to set a clear and specific timetable for achieving national entitlements, including elections, according to the will of the Libyans alone.
At the end of their statement, the members of the House of Representatives called on all the Libyan people, forces and institutions, to unify efforts and stand as one in the face of attempts to undermine the independence of our country or abort our dream of building an independent, secure and just state.
