Guterres: Any unilateral measures would deepen the political stalemate and weaken Libya's unity and sovereignty.
Pulbished on:New York, December 15, 2024 (LANA) - The Secretary-General of the United Nations, "Antonio Guterres", called on the Libyan leaders to engage constructively in the dialogue facilitated by the United Nations Mission to resolve differences, with the aim of paving the way for holding elections.
"Guterres" said in his latest report on Libya that any unilateral measures would further weaken Libya's unity and sovereignty, deepen the political stalemate, and distract from efforts to unify state institutions.
The Secretary-General stressed the importance of holding general elections as an essential step to restore the legitimacy of the main Libyan state institutions, before the Security Council session scheduled to discuss developments in the country.
He pointed in his report to the ongoing conflict within the State Council, which undermines its unity and negatively affects the decision-making process, calling on the leaders and members of the Council to find consensual solutions consistent with the political agreement.
"Guterres" affirmed the United Nations' commitment to supporting national reconciliation efforts, in cooperation with the African Union, to ensure a process led by Libyans and based on human rights principles, which contributes to achieving peace and stability in Libya.
