Libya stresses the need to address the causes of illegal migration.
Pulbished on:Tripoli 27 November 2024 (Lana) Undersecretary of the GNU-Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Expatriate Affairs, Emhamed Zidan, participated in the 115th session of the Board of Directors of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which is being held at the UN headquarters in Geneva, with the participation of international delegations to discuss issues related to migration and cooperation mechanisms to face the increasing challenges in this area.
In his remark, Zidan emphasized the importance of strengthening joint international efforts to find comprehensive solutions to the migration phenomenon in a way that achieves a balance between the requirements of national sovereignty and respect for human rights.
He also stressed the need to address the causes of migration, such as armed conflicts, natural disasters, and economic crises, which contribute to the displacement of millions around the world.
He also highlighted Libya's reservations on the UN General Assembly resolution entitled "The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration," stressing the right of states to manage their borders in accordance with their national interests while adhering to humanitarian and legal principles.
Zidan called on the IOM to adopt the Arabic language among the official languages of the organization, given its importance as a widely used international language and the pivotal role played by Arab countries in issues related to migration.
He reiterated Libya's commitment to continue cooperation with international partners to enhance migration management mechanisms, stressing the importance of international solidarity to confront common challenges in this area.
