The United Nations calls on the authorities in Libya to urgently address any form of violence against women and girls.
Pulbished on:New York, November 25, 2024 (LANA) - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya affirmed its steadfast support for Libyans in ending all forms of violence, including against women and girls.
The mission called in a statement on its website on national and local authorities to urgently address any form of violence against women and girls and enhance the protection of women's rights and empowerment in line with these authorities' international obligations.
The statement said that there are reports of a worrying increase in online violence, including harassment, threats and sexual extortion, especially against activists and public figures, which further emphasizes the need for stronger protection of women's rights, including in the digital space.
In its statement, the mission expressed its keenness and commitment to a comprehensive approach, including through prevention, protection, support for survivors and accountability, to end violence against women and girls in Libya.
The statement commended the progress made through cooperation between the Libyan state and United Nations entities in protecting and empowering women and girls, stressing its continued work with the government, local partners and civil society to ensure that every woman and girl in Libya enjoys her full rights and lives free from violence.
