The West welcomes the results of the municipal elections in Libya.
Pulbished on:Tripoli, November 25, 2024 (LANA) - France, Germany, Italy, Britain and the United States welcomed the results of the municipal elections held in Libya, describing them as an important step towards achieving political stability in the country.
The embassies of the five countries praised in a joint statement the announcement by the High National Elections Commission of the results of the voting in 58 municipalities across the country, considering that this process reflects the commitment of the Libyan people to the principles of democracy.
The statement stressed the aspiration of the five countries for the Libyans and their leaders to invest in this step to develop a reliable roadmap for holding comprehensive national elections, under the supervision of the United Nations.
The countries commended the effective role played by the High National Elections Commission in successfully managing the electoral process, also praising the efforts of the Libyan authorities, civil society and actors who contributed to ensuring the smooth running of the elections, and thanked the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the United Nations Development Program for their continued support.
The statement indicated that the newly elected local leaders had received a popular "mandate" calling on them to work seriously to achieve the aspirations of the Libyan people, calling on the competent authorities to support them in carrying out their duties in the public interest.
The group, known as the (2+3 Group), expressed the need to build on this positive momentum to prepare for the second round of elections, which is scheduled to begin next January. It called on the Libyan authorities to provide the necessary resources to ensure the success of the electoral process and to fully secure it.
