Pulbished on:New York, 25 November 2024 (Lana) Libya concluded its presidency of the fourth session of the Conference on the Establishment of a ME Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction.
According to a statement published by Libya’s Permanent Mission to the UN, the Libyan Representative, Ambassador Taher El-Sonni, handed over the presidency of the conference to Mauritania in a session attended by the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Philemon Yang, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and the Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu.
“Despite the challenges that the ME region witnessed throughout the year, during our presidency we carried out several activities, in particular introducing new procedural methods for the Conference's working groups,” the mission said.
“Leading substantive working group discussions on the topics of peaceful uses of nuclear energy and nuclear verification. within the framework of supporting the achievement of disarmament goals and ensuring regional security,” it added.
