Mohamed Takala elected as President of the High Council of State
Pulbished on:Tripoli, November 12, 2024 (LANA) - Mohamed Takala was elected as President of the High Council of State in a session held today, Tuesday, in Tripoli, attended by 70 members of the Council.
Three candidates competed for the presidency, with Takala receiving 55 votes, while candidate Naima Al-Hami received 8 votes, and candidate Idris Boufayed received 5 votes.
The members participating in the election session elected Masoud Obeid as First Deputy President of the High Council of State with a total of 49 votes out of 69.
The session came months after the outbreak of the crisis on August 26, when the Council voted to choose Khaled Al-Mishri as its president after he received 69 votes compared to 68 for Mohamed Takala, before a wide controversy arose over the legality of one of the members' vote after writing Mohamed Takala's name in a place other than the designated one.
As a result of the dispute, the judiciary was resorted to, which accepted an appeal filed by Mohamed Takala against his competitor for the presidency of the council, Khaled Al-Mishri.
On November 5, the Al-Suwani Primary Court issued a ruling rejecting the appeal of Khaled Al-Mishri, in his capacity as head of the High Council of State, against former President Mohamed Takala, to stop the implementation of the re-election of the council’s presidency.
Takala welcomed the ruling, and said that he “will call for a full session before mid-November, to discuss the items on the agenda, and take decisions to activate the role of the council as one of the pillars of the legislative authority.”
Khaled Al-Mishri issued a statement, expressing his surprise at the ruling to stop the appeal, and to advance the date of the session without notifying him, which was scheduled for November 26.
Al-Mishri said: “The ruling does not mean a decision on the matter, as the case filed by Takala is still under consideration by the court,” in addition to submitting an appeal to the Supreme Court against the urgent ruling issued by the Al-Suwani Court.
