Sudan refugee crisis worsens; more than 100,000 flee to Libya.

Pulbished on:

Kufra 14 October 2024 (Lana) The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that more than 65,000 Sudanese refugees have fled to Kufra, with 300-400 new arrivals each day, since the outbreak of war in Sudan in April 2023.

The Commission stated that while the number of refugees registered with the Commission is constantly increasing, the real numbers may be much higher, as the difficult conditions of escape across the desert, in addition to the inability of many refugees to reach registration centers, make it difficult to determine the exact number.

The continuous flow of refugees presents ongoing challenges for Libyan officials and international aid agencies. The most pressing needs include medical care, sanitation facilities, clean water, food, and safe shelter.

The UNHCR and its humanitarian partners called for the provision of urgent assistance to Sudanese refugees in Libya, including the provision of food, water, health care, and shelter, in addition to protecting them from exploitation and human trafficking.

This humanitarian crisis represents a major challenge for the Libyan authorities and international organizations, as it requires concerted efforts and international coordination to provide the necessary assistance to refugees.
