In a statement to LANA: The head of the migrant shelter center in Al-Jufra warns of the seriousness of the issue of illegal immigrants in the cities of the region.
Pulbished on:Al-Jufra, July 15, 2024 (LANA) - The head of the Immigrant Shelter Center in Al-Jufra, Brigadier General Ali Abdullah Ghaith, appealed to the executive authorities in the country, represented by the two governments, to provide the necessary support and capabilities to reduce the impact of illegal immigration on the cities of the Al-Jufra municipality.
Brigadier General Ali Abdullah Ghaith, in a statement to LANA, alerted to the seriousness of the file of illegal immigrants after their numbers increased significantly and noting the negative effects of this file socially and security-wise and the emergence of some legal violations such as theft, assault on property, drug trafficking and abuse, and prostitution, pointing out that police stations in the areas of Al-Jufra Municipality recorded a number of cases in which illegal immigrants were an integral party, and sentences were issued against them while they were inmates in the Correction and Rehabilitation Institution to serve sentences in the cases in which they were convicted.
The security official told LANA's correspondent in Al-Jufra that the migrant shelter center in the region suffers from a severe lack of capabilities, and no budgets were allocated to it to continue inventory and follow-up efforts, which resulted in the deportation of more than six thousand immigrants voluntarily to their countries over the past years, which indicates the exacerbation of the scale of the problem in the municipality of Al-Jufra.
The head of the shelter center explained that the municipality of Al-Jufra represents an essential transit area in the line of illegal immigration to the coast, which requires the necessity of activating all institutions related to the work carried out by immigrants, such as the municipal guard and health institutions, to reduce the phenomenon of employing immigrants who do not have identification papers or a health certificate in the country, businesses related to the health of citizens, such as restaurants, farms during the date season, pharmacies, and other economic activities that require cheap, untrained labor.
Brigadier General Ali Abdullah Ghaith called on all parties to bear their full responsibility with regard to the immigration file and provide capabilities to the immigration shelter center in Al-Jufra, similar to the rest of the centers throughout Libya, which received their budget and began the work of counting, sheltering and deporting immigrants and controlling their whereabouts within the cities.
