Al-Dbaiba confirms Libya’s reservations about the global agreement for safe, orderly and regular migration.
Pulbished on:Cairo, July 3, 2024 (LANA) - The Prime Minister of the National Unity Government, Abdul Hamid Al-Dbaiba, confirmed Libya’s reservations about the Global Agreement on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, which was approved by the United Nations General Assembly session in 2018, as it aims to legitimize illegal immigration, mix concepts between refugees and migrants, and distinguish between countries.
This came in his speech at the second regional review conference of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in the Arab Region, which was opened by the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Dbaiba, today, Wednesday, in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
According to the Prime Minister's Media Office, Al-Dbaiba pointed to the efforts made by the National Unity Government to reduce illegal immigration and coordinate with the affected regional and European countries to develop a strategy to regulate this issue.
Al-Dbaiba noted that Libya will host, on July 17, the Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum, which aims to discuss illegal immigration and issue an initiative to be drafted by the countries concerned, and based on the principle of respect and cooperation through national laws and policies, and the establishment of a strategic framework that enhances dialogue and cooperation between Africa and Europe. .
In his speech, Aboul Gheit welcomed the Prime Minister, stressing the importance of the immigration file and its handling in the League of Arab States, given that a number of Arab countries are considered transit countries, stressing the need to unify efforts regarding this file.
