Khoury: Economic situation in Libya has become more difficult.

New York, June 19, 2024 (LANA) - The Acting Head of the United Nations Mission to Libya, Stephanie Khoury, confirmed that the economic situation in Libya has become more difficult, with declining purchasing power, rising prices, and poor access to cash liquidity.

In her first briefing before the UN Security Council on Wednesday, Khoury said that there is an urgent need to unify Libya’s general budget, and urges all parties to resolve the existing differences to ensure a rapid agreement is reached and implemented transparently and responsibly.

Khoury expressed her deep concern about reports of violations in the country, specifically the repeated pattern of kidnapping or arbitrary detention of Libyans, calling for independent and transparent investigations into detainees and forcibly disappeared persons in Libya.

The UN envoy pointed out the disappearance of Member of Parliament Ibrahim Al-Darsi on May 7 in Benghazi, the death of political activist Siraj Daghman on April 15 under mysterious circumstances while he was detained in Benghazi, and the arbitrary detention of Member of Parliament Hassan Jabala with others in Tripoli.

Khoury continued that the mission continues to call for independent and transparent investigations into the deaths of men and women in detention, disappearances, and those arbitrarily detained and for them to be released.

Khoury called on all parties to participate and cooperate to approve the national reconciliation law that protects the rights of victims, praising the efforts of the Presidential Council and the House of Representatives in this regard, stressing that the UN mission and the African Union are ready to provide technical advice.
