Benghazi, May 25, 2024 (LANA) - The work of the African-European Conference on Migration began today, Saturday, in the city of Benghazi, in the presence of the Second Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Misbah Douma, the Speaker of the African Parliament, Fortune Shawarmbera, and the head of the Libyan government designated by the House of Representatives, Osama Hammad.

The opening of the conference was attended by a number of members of the House of Representatives and government ministers, in addition to a number of African and European delegations participating in the work of this conference.

In his speech, Hammad expressed his hope that the work of this conference will be crowned with complete success in order to come up with a clear vision and specific goals and agree on frameworks and paths for real solutions to immigration issues in general.

He said that, the state of Libya and the rest of the North African countries are transit countries for migrants and asylum seekers for various reasons heading to southern European countries.

He stressed that irregular migration is linked to many types of crimes and violations by smuggling and human trafficking gangs that exploit irregular migration routes to smuggle contraband and members of terrorist groups in the form of migrants.

He continued that, the responsibility falls on all of us in addressing the migration issue, and urgent solutions must be taken, such as supporting and strengthening the capabilities of law enforcement agencies in source and transit countries to deal with human smuggling and trafficking gangs.
