Tripoli, December 24, 2023 (LANA) - Today, Sunday, the Libyan people celebrate the 72nd anniversary of independence, an occasion that culminated in the struggle of Libyans to gain freedom after decades of the Italian occupation of the country, which set foot on Libyan lands in the year 1911.

The struggle against the Italian occupation continued until a United Nations resolution was issued granting Libya independence in November 1949, five years after the end of World War II.

On December 24, 1951, the late King Idris Al-Senussi declared Libya’s independence from the balcony of Al-Manar Palace in Benghazi.

He said in his independence speech: ((We announce to the honorable Libyan nation that as a result of its jihad, and in implementation of the United Nations resolution issued on November 21, 1949, with God’s help, the independence of our dear country has been achieved)).
