In his interview with the (LANA) envoy in Beijing: A Chinese official denies his country’s companies’ requirement to pay compensation in exchange for their return to work in Libya.

Beijing, December 6, 2023 (LANA) - Dean of the Foreign Studies University in Beijing,  Liu Chen, said that the Belt and Road Initiative launched by his country’s government, which is related to enhancing economic cooperation and mutual exchange with European countries, will include the Maghreb region, led by Libya.

In an interview conducted with him by the Libyan News Agency delegate participating in the training course in the field of media held in the capital, Beijing, Shen confirmed that Libyan society needs more cooperation to overcome the challenges it faces in various fields, noting that the Belt and Road Initiative based on cooperation and mutual benefit in accordance with the principle of consultation and joint construction with countries.

Regarding the possibility of Chinese companies returning to resume their suspended projects in Libya, Shen said that Chinese companies do not have sufficient channels to fully and comprehensively know all the situations in Libya, which prevents them from returning to complete their projects.

Shen called on the Libyan government and its affiliated companies to provide all information about their country by organizing seminars, conferences and forums on commercial opportunities around Libya to help Chinese companies know all the situations and remove ambiguity around these issues.

The Chinese official confirmed that his country's companies had previously implemented huge and strategic development projects in the fields of roads, bridges, infrastructure and residential buildings, but they suffered huge losses estimated at billions of dollars due to the events that Libya went through in 2011.

Shen explained that the Chinese government and its major companies are interested in the Libyan market as a strategic partner, noting at the same time that the two countries have a wide space, especially in the areas of infrastructure and production capabilities.

On the other hand, the Chinese official stressed that the return of Chinese companies to Libya is not linked to the extent of the Libyan government’s response to paying compensation for the losses that these companies suffered, but rather their return depends on the security conditions and ensuring their improvement in a way that enables them to return to complete their suspended projects.

At the conclusion of his interview with (LANA), the Dean of the University of Foreign Studies, Liu Chen, said that Libyan-Chinese relations are historical and well-established since the 1970s, reiterating his country’s support for Libya in all fields.
