New York, October 30, 2023 (LANA) - Today, Monday, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya for one year, until October 31, 2024.
Security Council Resolution No. (2702), regarding extending the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, urged Libyan political institutions and key stakeholders to resolve the outstanding political contentious issues related to the elections as soon as possible.
The resolution called on Libyan political institutions and key stakeholders to engage with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya, Abdullah Batili, in negotiations to hold free, fair, transparent and inclusive elections as soon as possible across the country.
The resolution affirmed that “there cannot be a military solution in Libya and calls on all parties to refrain from violence or any other actions that would escalate tensions, exacerbate conflicts, expose civilians to danger, and undermine the political process or the ceasefire reached on October 23, 2020.”
The resolution called on all parties to fully implement the ceasefire agreement, and urges UN Member States to respect and support its full implementation, including through the withdrawal of all foreign forces, foreign fighters and mercenaries from Libya without further delay.
