Tripoli, 29 October 2023 (Lana) The President of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Menfi, discussed yesterday with the special envoy of French President Emmanuel Macron to Libya, Paul Soler, developments in the political process in Libya and the efforts to hold parliamentary and presidential elections as soon as possible.

During the meeting held yesterday in Tripoli in the presence of the French Ambassador to Libya, Mostafa Mihraje, Al-Menfi thanked France’s vote in support of the Arab decision in the UN General Assembly on Palestine and its support for relief efforts in Derna.

Soler conveyed Macron's thanks to Al-Menfi for his support of France's balanced position expressed by the French Prime Minister regarding the call for a humanitarian truce in Gaza in preparation for a sustainable cessation of military operations.

The Soler also commended the Libyan position that contributed to reaching consensus on the unified Arab draft resolution submitted by Jordan, which led to France voting in favor of the draft resolution.

Soler expressed his gratitude for Menfi’s praise of France, led by President Macron, following a phone call the two presidents had after the painful incident, by providing assistance in dealing with the disastrous effects left by the floods in Derna and a number of cities and villages in Jabal Akhdar by establishing a field hospital, sending field teams, and providing funds to a number of UN organizations working in the affected areas.

The French envoy expressed his country's support for a comprehensive national authority for the reconstruction of stricken cities that meets efficiency standards, including local representatives from the affected areas, highlighting that France supports the High Financial Committee as a model for establishing a comprehensive national platform for the reconstruction of Derna and the rest of the affected areas of Jabal Akhdar.

The meeting discussed the latest political developments in Libya, where efforts were agreed to welcome the findings of the 6+6 Committee regarding the adoption of electoral laws and to stress the need to complete reaching a national consensus on the remaining outstanding issues, which are still a matter of disagreement, to hold parliamentary and presidential elections.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Soler renewed the invitation to Al-Menfi to attend the Paris International Peace Conference, which will be held on November 9 and 10.
