Al-Sunni: Freezing Libya’s funds abroad was to protect the wealth of Libyans, not to punish them
Pulbished on:New York, October 16, 2023 (LANA) - Libya’s representative to the United Nations, Al-Tahir Al-Sunni, called on Monday for the management of the Libyan Investment Authority’s assets under freeze through cooperation with the Libya Sanctions Committee.
Al-Sunni said in his speech during the UN Security Council session on Libya that managing the Libyan Investment Corporation’s assets will spare the corporation further losses, noting that the decision to freeze Libyan funds abroad in 2011 was intended to protect the wealth of the Libyans and not to punish them, as he put it.
The delegate called for stopping the politicization of the file of Libyan funds frozen by Security Council resolutions, and not involving the Libyan Investment Authority in any lawsuits or compensation, stressing that it is an institution that enjoys independence and has a sovereign nature, and its funds should not be harmed.
