Tripoli, October 5, 2023 (LANA) - The UN envoy to Libya, Abdullah Batili, requested to see a revised official copy of the laws that the “6+6” joint committee referred to the House of Representatives.

Batili said in a letter addressed to Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ageela Saleh, that he had not seen the electoral laws that the latter issued yesterday, Wednesday, and ordered that they be referred to the High National Elections Commission.

Batili added - according to what was reported by the Libyan Bawabat Al-Wasat newspaper - “I was surprised when the news reached me, through the press and social media platforms, that you had received the draft laws prepared by the (6+6) Committee and that you had presented them to a session of the House of Representatives, which in turn approved them.”

The UN envoy reminded the Speaker of the House of Representatives of their agreement together during their meetings in Benghazi on July 24, and at the residence of the Speaker of the House of Representatives on September 2, that communication between the House of Representatives and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya be exclusively through official channels, and that our positions should not be based on News published in the media or on social media.

Batili pointed out that the Speaker of the House of Representatives committed to the participation of the United Nations mission, and his personal participation, in the draft electoral laws that will be presented to the House of Representatives by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (6+6) once the final versions are received.

The UN official stressed that the electoral process should be based on enforceable electoral laws, expressing his regret that he had not officially received the laws, which put him in a position that did not allow him to comment on them.

Batili stressed that it is now necessary for Libyan leaders to respect their pledges to provide the people with legitimate and accountable institutions.

At the conclusion of his message, Batili reiterated the continued commitment of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya to implementing its mandate, in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions.
