Batili: The existence of a unified government agreed upon by all Libyan parties has become a must for moving towards elections
Pulbished on:New York, August 22, 2023 (LANA) – The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Libya said that the existence of a unified government agreed upon by all Libyan parties has become a must to lead the country towards elections.
In a briefing to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Batili confirmed that the Libyan leaders all agreed to amend the electoral laws, noting that he urged the 6 + 6 committee to expedite the end of these laws.
The UN envoy revealed that the mission is discussing the possibility of holding a meeting of the main political parties in Libya to reach a political agreement on contentious issues, and that he is working with the President of the Presidential Council to consider the possibility of holding negotiations between the Libyan leaders and the main parties.
In his briefing to the Security Council, Batili warned that the absence of a comprehensive political agreement that paves the way for holding elections in Libya will contribute to the deterioration of conditions in the country.
Batili added that he had warned Libyan leaders to avoid unilateral steps at all costs, and not to use public funds in the elections.
In his briefing, the UN envoy praised the efforts of the Presidential Council in the national reconciliation led by Representative Abdullah Al-Lafi and the preparation for the National Reconciliation Conference at the end of this year, stressing that Libya needs to close the page of internal division and the Libyans want to elect unified institutions.
