Tripoli, August 16, 2023 (LANA) - The US Special Envoy to Libya, Ambassador Richard Norland, said that Libya has made progress over the past months on several levels, pointing out at the same time that the violence that erupted in the capital, Tripoli, could hinder this progress.

Norland indicated, in an intervention with the Qatari "Al-Jazeera" channel, yesterday evening, Tuesday, that the commander of the "Brigade 444 Combat" Colonel Mahmoud Hamza was released and the cease-fire, based on negotiations that took place between military leaders and heads of state, and added, "We are continuing to monitor things are going on on the ground to make sure the fighting stops."

Norland called on all the warring parties to stop destabilizing, noting that "Libya has made great progress in the past months towards unifying the country and holding elections, and it is in no one's interest to impede this progress," stressing that the United States intends to continue to support Libyan leaders to engage in dialogue to unite the country and hold elections.

The US envoy pointed out that the return to fighting is always a matter of concern, but he stressed that it is now important to contain the violence immediately. He also considered that there are legitimate grievances for different parties, but they can be resolved through dialogue.

The US ambassador also spoke about the progress witnessed by the Joint Military Committee ((5 + 5)) in its negotiations towards achieving a unified military structure that would be able to control the borders of the various countries.
