The Italian government said in a statement that the conference aims to regulate the phenomenon of migration, combat human trafficking, and strengthen economic development according to a new model of cooperation between countries through joint planning and implementation of initiatives and projects in six main sectors: agriculture, infrastructure, education and training, health care, water, and the environment.
Italian officials revealed in a statement to Reuters that the countries scheduled to participate in the conference are Libya, Tunisia, Turkey, Algeria, and the UAE, in addition to the EU and International Monetary Fund.
The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni considered that Rome's hosting of the conference today is "a great Italian success", highlighting that her country will propose a cooperative model with countries that share the Mediterranean and stressing the need to "change the approach" to control this phenomenon.
Meloni said in a statement to the Italian channel "Tg1": "We will have more than 20 Mediterranean, Arab, European, and African countries, 16 heads of state and government, and 10 international organizations. We are all together to address the issue of immigration and to understand how to help the countries from which migrants leave and how to stop human trafficking and human traffickers," according to what was reported by the Italian "Nova" agency.
"It is a cooperative model that we propose with these countries that share the Mediterranean Sea, and they have a converging interest, and in order to control the immigration phenomenon, we need to change our approach. Italy has done that, and the agreement with Tunisia shows that this can be done," She added.
