US statement: The United States and Bathily agreed to provide assistance for free and fair Libyan elections in 2023.

Washington, February 24, 2023 (LANA) – The US State Department yesterday, Thursday, announced that Washington will host  a meeting that included the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Libya, “Abdullah Bathily,” and high-level officials from Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Qatar, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom, to discuss the Libyan people’s claim. holding presidential and parliamentary elections.

According to a press release from the Office of the Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting came before Batelli's briefing before the UN Security Council on the Libyan situation.

The press release indicated that the Special Representative Bathily, briefed the participants in the meeting on the latest developments regarding his consultations with leaders and institutions in Libya with the aim of strengthening the consensus that leads to holding elections in the year 2023.

The statement indicated that the participants took note of the achievements made by the Libyan Parliament and the High Council of State in the negotiations facilitated by Egypt on the constitutional basis of the elections, and they consulted about the next steps that should be taken to complete the preparations for the elections.

The statement pointed out that the Deputy Secretary of State, "Wendy R. Sherman," indicated in her statements to the visiting officials that the United States and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Bathily, agreed on the need for us to provide assistance to hold free and fair Libyan elections in the year 2023.
