Libya and the International Organization of Migration, report.

Pulbished on:

Tripoli, 22 December 2022 (Lana) The International Organization of Migration (IOM) this week evacuated a total of 290 illegal migrants in Libya, including Malian and Sudanese nationalities, to their countries, on two special flights.

According to the organization, these migrants underwent medical examinations before they were put on two flights that were operated as part of the voluntary humanitarian return program.

On the other hand, the International Organization for Migration revealed that 1,042 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya during the period from 11 to 17 December. In an updated bulletin on the maritime situation in Libya, the organization pointed out that 23,596 migrants have been intercepted and returned to the country, since the beginning of this year, including 21,622 men, 1,109 women and (765) children.

The organization recorded death of 520 migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean towards Europe, and considered 844 others missing between January 1 and December 17.

In 2021 32,425 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya. It is noteworthy that Libya, which is, in the meantime, a transit country and destination for migrants, has recently witnessed a large influx of illegal migrants, some of whom are victims of smuggling and human trafficking networks that are active in many source countries, not only in Africa but in a number of Southeast Asian countries, which take advantage of the state of security chaos resulting from the continued political division in Libya, to exploit them by organizing trips for them on rickety boats that end up drowning many of them.

Thousands of these migrants choose to settle in Libya every year, where most of them work in the private sector, specifically in the agriculture, construction and technical workshops, and send money to their families to help them cope with the difficult living conditions in their countries. Observers of the worsening phenomenon of illegal migration as a result of the worsening economic situation believe that the EU's security approach has so far failed to deter the flow of migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in their countries and seeking opportunities for a better life.
