Food and Drug Control Center confirms bread is free of potassium bromate.

Pulbished on:

Tripoli, 6 August 2022 (Lana) The Food and Drug Control Center (FDCC) denied that bread in Libya contained potassium bromate.

The center confirmed, during a press conference held Friday in the capital Tripoli, that potassium bromate is forbidden from entering Libya permanently by the Ministry of Economy since 2005, and that this ban was renewed last year.

The center said it took bread samples for testing from 50 Libyan cities from January 2021 to January this year, and found that bread was free of potassium bromate.

The center added that no non-competent body can take samples and send them to laboratories abroad, for this is unprofessional and illegal, and that there is a specific professional and legal method that protects the sample from adding any substance to it or manipulating it.

The Centre said it was surprised by the publication of "inaccurate" data on alleged presence of potassium bromate in the flour.

The center indicated that it would coordinate with the Attorney General's Office to re-draw samples to reassure citizens about the safety of bread, and to follow up on those behind this misleading news to the public.
