US Ambassador Norland strongly urges all Libyan leaders to avoid any escalatory steps
Pulbished on:. Tripoli, 28 July, 2022 (Lana) - The US ambassador and special envoy to Libya, Richard Norland, strongly urged all Libyan leaders to avoid any escalatory steps, and to support the agreement to hold presidential and parliamentary elections.
He said that the recent wave of violence can be overcome if Libyan leaders act together for the good of the country.
Free and fair elections are the only way to establish a legitimate national government. This came in a series of tweets published by Ambassador "Norland" on the network (Twitter) after his meeting today, Thursday, in the capital, Tripoli, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in the Government of National Unity, "Najla Al-Manqoush". “Minister Al-Manqush and I have had some time to discuss practical issues in our bilateral relationship, particularly reciprocity on the visa issue, but especially the importance of maintaining security in light of the recent clashes that sadly left 16 dead,” Norland said.
The Libyans deserve better than what happened in Tripoli or Misurata in recent days, he added, stressing that free and fair elections are the only way to establish a national government that enjoys legitimacy.
