The United Nations renews its mission in Libya for only 3 months.

Pulbished on:

Rome, April 29, 2022 (LANA) - The United Nations Security Council on Thursday unanimously renewed the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya for another three months, until July 31, the Italian Nova news agency reported.

The draft resolution submitted by the United Kingdom was approved by the five permanent members (China, France, United Kingdom, Russia and the United States) without amendments.

In the resolution, the Council called on the Secretary-General of the United Nations, "Antonio Gutierrez," to urgently appoint a new representative in Libya, according to what was published by the Italian Nova news agency.

It is worth noting that the mandate of the mission - without leadership after the resignation of former Slovak envoy "Jan Kubis" in November 2021 - will expire at the end of the month.

Since 2020, there has been a dual "command" of the UN mission, with a special envoy in Geneva and a coordinator in the Libyan capital.
