Pulbished on:Cairo, April 13, 2022 (LANA) - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya issued a statement this evening, Wednesday, regarding the launch of the joint committee meeting of the House of Representatives and the State, facilitated by the United Nations in Cairo.
According to the statement; the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Libya Stephanie Williams, under the auspices of the United Nations, launched in Cairo today the consultations of the joint committee consisting of the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State with the aim of defining a constitutional basis for holding free, credible, transparent and inclusive elections.
In her opening speech, Williams said at the meeting that "the entire Libyan people believe that the final solution to the issues afflicting Libya comes through elections conducted on a solid constitutional basis and an electoral framework that represents the protection of the electoral process with clear milestones and timetables that enable the way forward."
"Your role is critical to making your voice heard in support of the 2.8 million of your citizens in Libya who have registered to vote," the Special Adviser added in her welcoming remarks to representatives of both Houses.
Williams expressed her gratitude for the support provided by the government of the Arab Republic of Egypt and for hosting the current round of dialogue between the two councils, as well as for its support for the efforts of the United Nations to ensure a stable future in Libya.
The statement of the UN mission reminded that Special Adviser Williams announced on the 3rd of last March her initiative to form a joint committee of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State to agree on a strong constitutional basis to hold national elections as soon as possible, in response to the aspirations of 2.8 million Libyans who registered to vote in order to elect who represent them in a democratic way.
