Tripoli, April 1, 2022 (LANA) - The Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Stephanie Williams, said that the priority of the United Nations now is to help the Libyans conduct credible national elections at the earliest possible opportunity based on a solid constitutional basis and an electoral framework, noting that many Libyans were bitterly disappointed when the elections did not take place on December 24, 2021.

In a virtual dialogue with a number of Libyan politicians, on Thursday evening, Williams explained that she returned to Libya to support the holding of elections, in coordination with the UN mission, and to follow up on the implementation of the economic, political and security tracks.

She said, she had put forward an initiative to reach consensus on the adoption of a solid, consensual constitutional basis for the implementation of comprehensive national elections.

She added, "Since my return to Libya, I have listened to thousands of Libyan politicians and officials, and I have met with high-ranking Libyan officials inside Libya and abroad." Noting that the State Consultative Council delegation arrived in Tunisia and held fruitful consultations.

Williams explained that despite the absence of the House of Representatives from these three-day consultations, they were joined on the last day by representatives of the diplomatic corps in Libya, who presented their views on the constitutional base that will shape the future of Libya as a whole.

"We hope to hold a meeting of the two councils soon. The door is always open to any mediation facilitated by the United Nations, and I am in constant contact with the diplomatic corps accredited to Libya and high-level officials in various regional and international capitals", She added.

The UN envoy stressed that the elections are still at the fore in the priorities of the Libyan people, as evidenced by the 2.8 million Libyans who registered to vote, calling for maintaining the pace of the security track and supporting the maintenance of the ceasefire to keep the Joint Military Committee away from political turmoil and fluctuations.

She indicated that the United Nations continues to support Libyan institutions to implement reforms and economic endeavors, including the reunification of the Central Bank of Libya and the review of spending and distribution of the budget, as well as continuing to provide support, in cooperation with the National Oil Corporation and other institutions, to restore the flow of oil and maintain its levels below interruption or exploitation.

"We have seen continued progress in reunifying the Central Bank of Libya to implement the recommendations of the international financial review process," she said.

On Thursday evening, Williams held a digital dialogue on the Libyan Dialogue platform, as part of her extensive consultations with various Libyan components at home and abroad, with the aim of restoring the electoral process and returning it to its right track, so that the Libyans can elect their representatives,” according to the United Nations mission, through its official page on the website.
