UN Secretary-General warns during Security Council session of a global food crisis.
Pulbished on:New York, 24 March 2022 (Lana) Many countries, including Libya, Egypt, Lebanon, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, import at least half of their wheat from Ukraine or Russia, making these and other countries in the Middle East and Africa vulnerable to a food crisis if the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine continues, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.
"This situation affects the poor more than others, and sows the seeds of political instability and unrest around the world," Guterres said.
He made the announcement at a session of the UN Security Council on Wednesday morning in New York, devoted to cooperation between the Council and regional and sub-regional organizations.
On the other hand, the Secretary-General on Wednesday made several remarks before the Global Crisis Response Team Committee, which is part of the International Organization on Food, Energy and Finance, noting that these crises need urgent action, and their proposed solutions must be ready for implementation.
