Head of Government of National Unity calls on women's action leaders to push for elections.

Pulbished on:

Tripoli, 19 March 2022 (Lana) The Head of the Government of National Unity Abdul Hamid Al Dabaiba, called on the leaders of women's action in Libya to lead a broad movement to protest in all peaceful ways, and push for elections as soon as possible.

This came during a speech delivered by Al Dabaiba at the Women's Gathering in Support of Elections, organized by the Government on Saturday, in Tripoli, with the participation of Government ministers, activists, women leaders and representatives of civil society institutions from across Libya.

"We are meeting today and our country is going through critical political circumstances and we are facing a historic stage by either achieving a democratic transformation that will establish the future of our children and grandchildren, or we will lose a historic opportunity to establish a bright future for our children and grandchildren," Al Dabaiba told the audience. "Today we rely on your national will to support the course of the elections, and we trust the leaders of the National Women's Action to support the electoral process, and reject the extension of the bodies that hindered the democratic transition, and must start from today a extensive movement under your leadership to call on Libyans to protest with all peaceful means to push for elections which we see very close, he said.

He stressed that women's political action leaders have become freer and more aware of the historical responsibility we all have to achieve stability and peace, stressing the importance of women's crucial role in resisting returning to the division square and war by supporting the course of elections and active participation in them.

The Prime Minister reiterated that the Government's task was to hold elections, which it did not and will not abandon, and would not back down, accusing other parties of backing away from the elections and replacing them with extension and the return of political division. "We have the courage to hold elections, and we have set a date for the holding of these elections," he said, asking about other political parties providing flimsy justifications and plans for an extension without any election dates.

The Head of the Government considered that the "plan for the return of trust to the people" to hold elections in June is rejected only by few beneficiaries who exercise control over political life in Libya, describing it as "a plan for democratic transition, not a step to share power and disrupt the electoral and democratic process."

The Head of the Government of National Unity urged, at the end of his speech, women participating in the forum, workers, housewives and all groups of women in Libya to form a women's movement that rejects the dominance of "warlords" over Libya, promotes women's participation in the political movement, and does not allow the confiscation of their right for elections, to seek a brighter future for their children and grandchildren."
