New York, March 16, 2022 (LANA) - The Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Rosemary DiCarlo, said that the continuation of the confrontation over the legitimacy of the executive authority in Libya will lead to the existence of two parallel administrations again, which leads to instability and turmoil that may engulf the prospects of holding elections.

In her briefing today, Wednesday, to the Security Council, DiCarlo stressed that the United Nations is making great efforts to settle this crisis by gathering Libyan stakeholders to agree on a constitutional basis to hold elections as soon as possible.

She indicated that the United Nations is now focusing on protecting the work of the Joint Military Commission Five Plus Five from the negative effects of the political crisis and continuing its work to ensure the withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries from the country.

On the other hand, DiCarlo confirmed that the Libyan House of Representatives was informed that the vote of confidence on the proposed new government should be transparent and consistent with Libyan rules and laws. Noting that the United Nations had received reports that the vote was marred by procedural errors and threats of violence against members of Parliament and their families, which affected the credibility of the vote.

She said that one of our priorities is to focus on fulfilling the aspirations of more than 2 million Libyans who have registered to participate in the elections so that they can choose their leaders according to transparent, credible and comprehensive elections in accordance with a legal and constitutional framework.
