Tripoli, 16 March 2022(Lana) U.S. Representative at the Security Council Ambassador Jeffrey de Laurentiis calls on Libya’s House of Representatives and the High Council of State to dialogue, and to participate in the U.N.-facilitated dialogue to create a consensual constitutional basis for the upcoming elections.

In a speech to the Security Council on Wednesday on Libya, the U.S. diplomat said his country supports the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the National Electoral Commission to prepare for final elections and conduct a free and fair vote.

"Free and fair elections are the only way to stability and prosperity for the Libyan people, and we must support the libyan people's desire for elections," he said.

He stressed the importance of supporting the efforts of The Secretary-General's Special Adviser Stephanie Williams to create dialogue between key political actors to achieve a quick agreement on a consensual and constitutional basis for presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible. The U.S. diplomat described the current situation in Libya as "very worrying," adding that many actors, whose political legitimacy is questionable, are vying for control of the government. The U.S. representative to the Security Council warned that the current situation in Libya could develop into an escalation of violence and further delay the possibility of presidential and parliamentary elections.
