Stephanie Williams: Pachaga and Al Dabaiba may come together to stop a slide into violence.
Pulbished on:Washington, 11 March 2022 (Lana) UN Secretary-General Special Adviser on Libya Stephanie Williams said Friday that Parliament-selected Prime Minister Fathi Pashagha and Head of the Government of National Unity Abdul Hamid Al-Dabaiba may meet for direct talks to resolve the political crisis in the 'OPEC member state'.
This came in remarks Williams gave to Bloomberg News on Friday on whether Prime Minister-chosen by Parliament Fathi Pashaga and the current Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Al Dabaiba had agreed to sit down for talks. There were positive reactions from both, and the good thing is that everyone is ready to participate in a constructive dialogue, and that's what we need to build on, she told Bloomberg.
Meanwhile, Pashagha told the Associated Press in an interview this week: "the country can unite without further fighting and his government will focus on holding elections soon."
Bloomberg quoted Stephanie Williams as saying: "The United Nations does not favor either side and is not in the mood of supporting or recognizing governments, elections are the only way out of Libya’s political crisis and are also necessary to renew the popular legitimacy of Libyan institutions.
'I started this year by saying that I think that if everyone goes to some extent, we can have an electoral event by June, though the two Parliament chambers decided to do things of their own. This has taken us up almost to mid-March, and I can not produce exact timetable until we work with the councils to lay out the constitutional rule and re-consider electoral laws, she said.
