High Council of State rejects constitutional amendment and amendment of executive branch.

Pulbished on:

Tripoli, 25 February, 2022 (Lana) - The High Council of State announced its rejection of the outputs issued by the House of Representatives regarding the constitutional amendment and the amendment of the executive authority.

The media office of the council stated in a post on its official page that the rejection decision came due to the violation of the two amendments to the political agreement and the form and spirit of consensus between the two councils.

The Council made it clear that the decision was taken after extensive discussions by its members during the "seventy-fourth" pending session, which was held, Thursday, regarding the discussion of the two amendments. He added that the House of Representatives voted on these two amendments, despite the request of the High Council of State for more time to present the constitutional amendment to the House before voting on it by the House of Representatives.

However, the House of Representatives did not react to this demand, considering that the amendment was marred by many procedural violations. The High Council of State proposed the formation of a joint committee with the House of Representatives to prepare a constitutional rule by March 31, 2022, after which electoral laws would be agreed upon between the two houses.

The parliament expressed its desire to continue communication with the House of Representatives in order to reach a real consensus, in response to popular demands that elections be held urgently.

The Council called on the House of Representatives to postpone any amendment of the executive authority until the completion of the establishment of the constitutional base and electoral laws.
