Statement by Libyan News Agency employees on naming of Chairman for Libyan News Agency.

Pulbished on:

Tripoli, 7 February 2022 (Lana) - We, employees of the Libyan News Agency affiliated with the Libyan House of Representatives, according to Law No 8/ 2021, are surprised by what the spokesman for the Government of National Unity, Mohamed Hammouda, published on his facebook account regarding a decision issued by the Council of Ministers at its first regular meeting of 2022 on Sunday, February 6, naming Chairman of the Board of Directors for (the Libyan Agency for News), we do not know whether the reference was meant to be the official Libyan News Agency which is affiliated with the House of Representatives or was a decision to name a chairman for a newly- established news agency.

Here, we would like to inform you that the official name of the agency is (Libyan News Agency (Lana)), and if it is the one meant by the statement of the spokesman, then this is not legally permissible by virtue of the affiliation of (the Libyan News Agency) to the Libyan House of Representatives, which issued Law No. (8) to incorporate the agency into the institutions affiliated to it on the first of November 2021 corresponding to Rabi’ Al-Awwal 26, 1443 AH. The issuance of such a decision is the sole competence of the Libyan House of Representatives, the legislative authority of the country, and it is a jurisdiction matter of the public system.

While we affirm our support for the approach taken by the Government of National Unity after gaining confidence from the House of Representatives to unify the Libyan institutions, including the media institutions, we call on the Presidency of the Council of Ministers headed by Mr. Abdul Hameed Al Dabaiba to proceed on this approach, and to issue a clarification on statement issued by its spokesman in this regard.

We also reiterate our adherence to the impartiality and professionalism of the agency and its commitment to stay away of political wrangling and conflicts as it is a sovereign media institution that adheres to the ethics of the profession, serves the issues of the homeland and the Libyan citizens, and works to communicate the truth to public. Indeed Lana has been known in the press and media circles for its editorial line that shuns away from hate speech and sedition pursued by many Libyan media institutions in the past years. Lana pursues the direction of national unity among the components of the Libyan people and everything that would preserve Libya's unity, sovereignty and security.
