Launch of a project to monitor, evaluate and rationalize water usage in Libya's agriculture sector.
Pulbished on:Tripoli, 31 January 2022 (Lana) The Italian Agency for Development and Cooperation and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Water Resources of the Government of National Unity, have announced the launch of a project to "monitor, evaluate and rationalize water usage for Libya's agriculture sector."
A joint press release issued Monday indicated that after the approval on March 15, 2021 of a grant of 830,000 euros from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, through the results of this project, an assessment in the agricultural sector will be carried out to support, monitor, evaluate and rationalize water usage in the sector, particularly water consumption and productivity.
A strategic water resource management plan will be formulated to review water, food and energy needs, the statement said, adding that the project's expected impact is to enhance food security in Libya, particularly in the Fezzan region, through the more efficient use of agricultural water, while addressing severe water shortages, environmental degradation and mass population displacement.
Through this two-year initiative, the Italian Agency for Development and Cooperation, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the Libyan authorities will strengthen their partnership to build national capacity for the effective use of agricultural water in the country in general and in the Fezzan region in particular, the press release said.
