Williams calls for a focus to be made on how the elections can be conducted.

Pulbished on:

Tunis, 28 December 2021 (Lana) UN Secretary General special adviser on Libya Stephanie Williams said Monday the main concern after postponing the first round of presidential elections scheduled for last week should be on how to proceed with the elections and not on the fate of the government.

In an interview published by Reuters, Williams said that most Libyans wanted an end to "this endless transition period."

Asked if she believed the mandate of the Government of National Unity remained in place, Williams said it was up to Parliament, but that "the main focus should be on holding elections". Any changes to the Government had to be made in accordance with the rules established by previous internationally recognized political agreements.

However, she stated that any elections must be held to equal standards in which no candidate had the advantage of holding official office. "Everyone has to take a step back for a certain period," Williams was quoted as saying, adding that any changes to the government must be conducted in accordance with the rules established by previous political agreements, which have been internationally recognized.
