Rome, December 20, 2021 (LANA) - The Italian ambassador to Libya, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi, confirmed today, Monday, that the elections scheduled for December 24 in Libya are “part of an ongoing political process.”

"The situation in Libya today has changed a lot compared to 2011: a political process is underway, and there is international support for this process," Grimaldi said on the sidelines of the 14th conference of Italian ambassadors to the world, held in the Italian capital.

Regarding concerns about the failure to hold elections in Libya according to their announced date, the Italian diplomat noted that “even in the 2012 elections, there was a delay,” referring to the postponement of the elections for members of the (General National Congress) at the time from June 19 to July 7.

The Italian ambassador reiterated that it is "important that there is a political process, and the December 24 elections are part of this process... and the hope is that the postponement will be a short-term delay," noting that the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Adviser to Libya, the American diplomat, Stephanie Williams  returned to Tripoli and "is operating with the full support of Italy and the United Nations."
