Food and Drug Control Center publishes a scientific clarification on the inaccuracies published on tuna and fish products.
Pulbished on:Tripoli, 19 December, 2021 (Lana) - The Food and Drug Control Center issued a clarification on the fallacies published on tuna and fish products, stressing that everything published is incorrect and please do not pay attention to rumors and such matters must be checked.
It stated, "The Libyan Standard Specification No. 5/2020 for tuna contains all tuna fish that are allowed to be imported, including tuna fish found in the local market. The Libyan Standard Specification for tuna contains 16 types of tuna fish. He explained that - there is no name for tuna under the name bluefin, but there are yellow and blue tuna fish, which are included in the Libyan standard specification for tuna, and that the skipjack tuna fish is one of the best types recommended by several organizations such as the US Food and Drug Authority and the World Health Organization”.
The Food Control Center added that the Libyan standard specification for tuna set maximum limits for total mercury for canned tuna, which is not allowed to exceed 0.5 parts per million.
It is noteworthy that the Food and Drug Control Center of the Control Authority is the legally authorized body to release food and medicine imported to Libya, including canned tuna.
