New York, October 1, 2021 (LANA) - The Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, Nicolas de Riviere, affirmed that the work of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, which is supported by France, is “critical in supporting the political transition process and preparing for the parliamentary and presidential elections scheduled for December 24”.

He added, in his speech during the vote on the Security Council resolution to extend the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Libya, that the role of the United Nations mission “is essential to moving forward in implementing the ceasefire agreement of October 23, 2020, including supporting Libyan efforts to withdraw foreign forces and mercenaries, with the support of the International community.”

The French diplomat stressed the need to restructure the United Nations Support Mission in Libya in the next renewal in January 2022, at the request of the Secretary-General, pointing out that “this restructuring is not an objective in itself. It should be a tool to enhance the effectiveness of the mission’s work.”

He explained that France will organize, with Italy, Germany and the United Nations, an international conference on Libya at the level of heads of state and government in Paris on November 12. This is with the aim of supporting the political process, especially the organization of the Libyan legislative and presidential elections, as well as for the full implementation of the ceasefire and, on a larger scale, to achieve stability, taking into account the regional repercussions of the Libyan crisis.
