Pulbished on:

Rome, 1 September 2021(Lana) The EU is prepared to contribute to monitoring of the ceasefire in Libya, a EU Diplomat said.

Italian Aki news agency quoted the source as saying ‘dispatching a mission this way is a matter for the UN, sponsor of the peace process in Libya, declaring that the Union was prepared to offer assistance once the UN or the Libyan authorities requested that.

The source noted that the European presence was to support the peace process through police training mission and the Irini Operation.

‘Irini is not restricted to monitoring of execution of the UN Security Council’s resolution regarding arms embargo on Libya, but to train the Libyan coast guard, which we hope will start soon’, the source said.

US Special Envoy to Libya Jan Kupis said before the ‘Libya’s Neighboring Countries Meeting in Algeria that deployment of the first group of UN observers to monitor the ceasefire is underway , and temporary facilities have been pinpointed in Sirte, predicting support for the mechanism of monitoring of the ceasefire, if conditions permitted in the coming weeks.
