In First Response to Amnesty International Report: Al Koni: We Share with Our European and UN Vision That Migrants Either Allowed in or Returned to Source Countries with Dignity.

Tripoli, 17July 2021(Lana) Member of Presidency Council Musa Al Koni has called for accelerating work with European partners and the United Nations, to assist illegal migrants, either by allowing them in in destination countries or returning them to source countries in a dignified manner, in reference to Amnesty International report over illegal migrants conditions in Libya.

This came in a tweet Al Koni made, after a meeting with Interior Minister Khalid Mazen, to discuss the problems faced by detention centres in Libya.

Al Koni said in his tweet, the first official Libyan response to Amnesty International latest report , ‘on the eve of the blessed Eid we discussed with the Interior Minister problems faced by detention centres, accommodating migrants driven by economic or political circumstances to head to Europe through our territories, and to share with our partners and the UN a vision, that these have to be promptly assisted; either by allowing them in in destination countries, or returning them to source countries with dignity.’

Amnesty International published a dim report on Thursday on conditions of illegal migrants, who were stopped and detained in Libya as they tried to cross the Sea for Europe, criticizing European countries policies on this matter.

Observers see that the report has overshadowed more than one truth, and a prejudice on Libya, by blaming the country alone for this file, ignoring the fact that it is a universal issue, and that Libya was just a transit country, and itself a victim of the negative, societal, financial and security repercussions, and that the solution needed joint international cooperation in which all countries and regional and international organisations take part, given that it is an international humanitarian issue, all should take part in finding a solution to it.
