Al koni to Kupis: International Community Has to Stand up to Internal and External Advocates of Elections Delay and Extension of Status quo.
Pulbished on:Tripoli, 8 July 2021(Lana) Member of Presidency Council Musa Al koni called on the international community to face up to those who seek to delay elections and extend the status quo in Libya, and to present a clear and applicable roadmap that takes into account relevant overlapping Libyan and foreign decisions.
In a meeting with the UN Special Envoy to Libya Yan Kupis in Tripoli on Thursday, Al Koni stressed Presidency Council’s commitment to the Dec. 24 elections, and said they needed more than a theoretical agreement, a confrontation to the internal and external current which is seeking to put off the elections and extend the status quo, noting that there was a need for the the international community to put forward a practical visualization for withdrawal of foreign forces from Libya.
As for Berlin Conference outcome, Al Koni said the international agreement stipulated that elections be held on set time, which he said will lead to stability in Libya, end the crisis, get all foreign forces out of the country. He urged a commitment to the ceasefire as an essential step to achieve stability and hold elections.
Al Koni briefed the UN Envoy on efforts to approve the constitutional basis for holding the elections, voicing his concern over procrastination of some members of the Dialogue Forum.
The meeting also dealt with problem in southern Libya, the risk of terrorism and foreign presence in the region, whereby Al Koni said the South provided the best ground for unifying the Libyan Army, and forming of a unified operation room that could lead efforts of the Presidency Council to establish security and stability on the southern border.
