An Italian MP calls for turning the Irene operation into a search and rescue mission to empty migrant centers in Libya, and to propose legal ways to emigrate to the European Union.

Rome, April 27, 2021 (LANA) - The representative of the Democratic Party in the Italian Parliament, “Lia Quartapelle,” today called on the government of her country to act immediately, and to take advantage of the presence of a new government in Libya, to start a close dialogue with it, especially on the economic level and the immigration file.

 "It is necessary to convert Ireni's European mission into a search and rescue mission in the Mediterranean, to establish humanitarian corridors to empty migrant centres in Libya, and to propose legal routes for immigration to the European Union," Quartapelle said.

She added, stressing that we must act immediately and do so with greater determination, because there is a new government in Libya with which close dialogue must start on aspects of stability and economic recovery, as well as migration management.
