The UN envoy to Libya discusses with French officials the situation in Libya and the developments in the region.
Pulbished on:Paris, April 24, 2021 (WAL) - The head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Jan Kubisch, discussed during his visit to Paris with the French Foreign Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, the situation in Libya, especially in light of the recent developments in the region.
The mission said in a statement on its website yesterday, Saturday, that the two sides stressed the importance of expediting the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and the complete withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries.
Kubisch and Le Drian called during their talks for the need to make more progress in implementing the roadmap approved by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum to hold the elections on December 24, 2021, as it is crucial to maintaining peace, security and stability in Libya and the wider region.
The Special Envoy also met separately with the Director of the Middle East and North Africa at the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Christophe Farnot, and the Special Envoy, Paul Soler, along with other senior officials.
In a meeting with the President's advisor for the Middle East and North Africa, "Patrick Dorrell", the special envoy, "Jan Kubisch," reiterated the United Nations appreciation of the French President and the Government of France for their continued support for the efforts of the United Nations and the peace process in Libya.
The situation in Libya was discussed against the backdrop of recent developments in the region, as the two sides called on national and international actors to respect Libya's sovereignty, including by complying with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
While in Paris, the Special Envoy exchanged views on ways to advance the peace process in Libya in a fruitful discussion with the former Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Libya, Ghassan Salama.
